A Taste of Kibera

Jambo,

It is now the end of our second week with SHOFCO, and I am admittedly exhausted. Here follows several new photographs for your viewing pleasure:

Scrabble

SHOFCO is completely addicted to scrabble, and they play at every opportunity (sometimes creating new words, and more often than not, enjoying challenging one another with the dictionary always handy). I would like to thank Dahlia, Esther, Frank, and my family for donating their boards!

Lunch

Wojciech, or should I say Ochieng, and I are having a conversation with Dalton over lunch (sometime last week). He aspires to become a news anchor, and as I have mentioned several times, amuses me with his ostentatious vocabulary : ).

interview

This week, two young documentary filmmakers visited SHOFCO from Markham, Ontario. Here, Ryan interviews Kennedy Odede among the skuma (kale) in the garden.

camera

SHOFCO learns how to use digital cameras! This workshop was followed by a hilarious series of pictures, as every SHOFCO member wanted their photograph taken, and had fun posing.

Hackysack

Wojciech and I introduced hackysack, the day after we had tried playing frisbee. Hackysack went over far better, as it is more similar to football, which is so popular here. In this photo, you can see from left to right, Wojciech, John, and Maurice.

Tomorrow, Wojciech and I trek off to Masai Mara, feeling somewhat guilty to be leaving SHOFCO. Yet, I think this is a break that we both need, and I am looking forward to seeing a different part of the country, and getting to know more about the nature and wildlife that Kenya possesses! We will be there over Canada Day, which is also Wojciech’s birthday, but we have celebrated today with the group by surprising him and Anne, who had a birthday last week, with a chocolate cake.

I am becoming ever more infused with reggae and have made it my mission to find some blank CDs to burn music onto before leaving - the workshop rooms are alive with Richie Spice, Bob Marley, and many others, whenever we are not teaching.

As my mind is all over the place, I shall leave this blog to rest, and hope to write more when we return from the Mara.

Hannah
